How this checker works
Data. Department for Transport road safety data (STATS19), 2021 to 2025: police-reported road crashes in Great Britain where someone was injured. We include crashes where the first object a vehicle hit after leaving the road was a wall or fence (code 11, "hit object off carriageway"). Each crash is counted once, however many vehicles were involved.
- Crashes with no injuries aren't in this data, so the real number of walls and fences hit is higher.
- "Wall or fence" can be any wall or fence: a garden, a field, a business. It doesn't tell us a home was hit.
- Only the first object hit off the road is recorded. A car that hit a tree then a wall is recorded as hitting the tree.
- Police normally record the location where the vehicle left the road, not where it came to rest, so a dot can't show which property was hit.
- Severity is the most serious injury to anyone in the crash, usually people in the vehicles.
- Speed limit is the road's posted limit, not how fast the vehicle was going. Darkness and wet roads describe conditions at the time, not the cause.
- Area rankings are counts, not rates, so large council areas rank higher. Northern Ireland isn't included.
