Article 4 directions in Guildford

Guildford Borough Council looks after 40 conservation areas, and seven of them have Article 4 directions: the town centre, Charlotteville and Warren Road, Waterden Road, St Catherine's, Onslow Village, Shere and East Clandon. Where a house faces the road, these remove the usual right to lay a new hard surface or to change a front wall, fence or gate without permission.

The council's own appraisal of Waterden Road notes front gardens and walls being lost to parking. So if you live in one of these areas, the drive you have is worth keeping as it is. A bollard is set into the existing drive, but check with the council before you book, and don't plan new paving or a wider opening without asking first. Our planning guide covers what to ask.

Hills and slopes

Guildford is a hilly town. The High Street climbs from the River Wey, and the land rises steeply towards Pewley Down on the east side, so some drives here have a slope to them.

A slope is fine for a telescopic post. When you send your photos, take one from the road looking up or down the drive, so we can see the slope and where the car sits.

A growing town

Weyside Urban Village, on the old Slyfield site, is planned for 1,650 homes, with work started in February 2024. Up to 1,800 more are proposed at Gosden Hill, east of Burpham. On any new estate, check your deeds or the management company's rules on changes to the front before you book.

Getting to Guildford

Guildford is about 40 minutes from our base in Basingstoke, around 25 miles by road, outside rush hour. There is no call-out charge for homes.

Prices in Guildford

Distance doesn't change the price. A galvanised telescopic post is £629 fitted, and on a double drive the second post on the same visit is £579, so £1,208 for the pair.

Every price is in our cost guide, and the steps from quote to fitting are on our homepage.
