Telescopic vs fold-down bollards: which do you need?

Short answer: a telescopic bollard is for stopping your car being stolen. A fold-down post is for stopping other people parking on your drive.

They look similar from the road. They do very different jobs.

How each one works

Telescopic bollard. A steel post sits inside a sleeve set in concrete, up to a metre below the surface. You unlock it, lift it up, and it locks in place. When you want to drive out, you unlock it and it drops back down flush with the ground.

Fold-down post. A post on a hinged base plate, bolted to the surface. You unlock it and fold it flat to drive over, then fold it back up.

The difference that matters

A fold-down post is held on by bolts at ground level. A telescopic post is anchored deep in concrete.

If someone is determined to get a car off your drive, a fold-down post is the weaker point. A telescopic post is far harder to force.

When a fold-down post makes sense

  • Your neighbour keeps parking across your drive
  • You've got a parking space in a shared car park
  • You want to stop people turning in your drive
  • Your drive can't be dug, for example because of services underneath

When you want telescopic

  • You've got a car that's a known target, especially keyless models
  • You've had a car stolen, or a neighbour has
  • Your insurer has asked what security you've got
  • You want the drive completely clear when the post is down

Can you mix them?

Yes. A common set-up is a telescopic post in front of the car you're protecting, and a fold-down post on the second space or the side of the drive. You get proper security where it matters and a cheaper post where it's just about parking.

Questions people ask

Can you drive over a lowered telescopic bollard? Yes. A steel lid closes over it and it sits flush with the drive.

Do fold-down posts rust? Galvanised and powder-coated posts last well. The hinge and lock need a drop of oil a couple of times a year.

Which is easier to use every day? Fold-down, slightly. If lifting a telescopic post is a struggle, a lift-assist version does most of the work for you.
