Hills, lanes and big drives
This is the hilliest corner we cover. Hindhead is often called the highest village in Surrey, with buildings between 185 and 253 metres above sea level, and many roads around Haslemere are narrow, twisting and steep.
It's also detached-house country. At the 2011 Census, around 40% of homes in Haslemere parish were detached. Bigger drives often mean more than one car, so it's common to need two posts. When you send your photos, include one from the road showing any slope.
Conservation areas and the Surrey Hills
Haslemere has two conservation areas, including the town centre, designated in 1974. Godalming has five, including its town centre. Haslemere's main settlements are surrounded by the Surrey Hills National Landscape.
A bollard on your own private drive doesn't usually need planning permission. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with Waverley Borough Council before you book. Waverley is due to be replaced by a new West Surrey Council on 1 April 2027, so after that date, check with the new council. Grayshott is over the border in Hampshire, so it comes under East Hampshire District Council. Our planning guide covers what to ask.
