Villages with conservation areas

Most villages here have a conservation area at their heart. Overton's was designated in 1971 and extended in 2019, Whitchurch's in 1978, Church Oakley's in 1976, and Laverstoke and Freefolk's in 1990. Deane sits almost entirely inside one.

There are no Article 4 directions in these villages; Basingstoke and Deane's four are all in Basingstoke town. A bollard on your own private drive doesn't usually need planning permission, but if your home is listed or inside a conservation area, check with Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council before you book. Our planning guide covers what to ask.

Old mills and new homes

This is paper-making country. Laverstoke Mill was founded as a paper mill in 1719 and made banknote paper for the Bank of England; it's now the Bombay Sapphire distillery. Overton's own paper mill closed in 2022.

The villages are still growing. Up to 120 homes were allowed at Overton Hill in 2015, and 130 more were allowed on appeal at Sapley Lane in April 2026. In Whitchurch, Evingar Road added 93 homes. On any new estate, check your deeds or the estate rules on changes to the front before you book.
