Which driveway bollard do you need?

Three things decide it: what you're protecting, how wide your drive is, and how often you'll be lifting the post.

Here's how to work it out in two minutes.

Step 1: What are you protecting against?

Theft of the car. You want a telescopic bollard, anchored in concrete.

People parking on your drive. A fold-down post will do the job for less.

Both. Telescopic in front of the car, fold-down on the second space.

Step 2: What's the car?

Your car Our recommendation
Small car or hatchback Galvanised telescopic, from £629
Family car or estate Galvanised or colour telescopic, from £629
SUV, 4x4 or van Heavy-duty telescopic, £795
High-value or frequently targeted model Heavy-duty telescopic, £795
You care most about looks Stainless telescopic, £695

Bigger, heavier vehicles need a thicker post. Our heavy-duty post is the Marshalls Rhino R8, a 670mm tall, 90mm post with a 5mm steel wall, certified by Sold Secure to its Automotive Gold standard.

Step 3: How often will you lift it?

A standard telescopic post takes a few seconds and a bit of effort to lift.

If you're in and out several times a day, or bending and lifting is a problem, a lift-assist bollard (£1,295) has a built-in lift-assist mechanism, so you only lift about 7kg.

Step 4: How many posts, and where?

One car on a single-width drive: one post, in front of the car, usually does it.

Two cars, or a wide drive: you may need two, so there's no gap a car can squeeze through. Manufacturer guidance for telescopic posts is usually to keep them no more than about 1.2 metres apart.

Check the other ways out. If a car could be driven over a lawn, a low wall or a neighbour's drive, a post in front of the car won't stop it. We'll point this out from your photo.

Where the post goes. Usually directly in front of the car, close enough that it can't be driven round, but far enough that you can open the doors and walk past.

Send us a photo of your drive from the road. We'll tell you which post, how many and where, and give you a fixed price the same day.

Questions people ask

Can I have different colours? Yes. Galvanised is standard. Black, red, yellow, silver and other colours are £30 more per post.

Will two posts on one job cost double? No. Each extra post on the same visit is £50 less.

What if I change my car? The sleeve stays in the ground. If you need a bigger post later, we can usually swap the post rather than dig a new hole, depending on the model.
