Low numbers, different risk
Small towns and villages usually have low vehicle crime rates. But the risk looks different out here.
Drives are longer and quieter, often out of sight of the road and the neighbours. A thief working on a car at the top of a long drive at 3am is unlikely to be seen or heard. And village households are more likely to have a 4x4, van or pickup, which are all targets in their own right.
What it means for you
The chance of it happening may be lower. The cost if it does, and the chance of anyone noticing, is not.
How to protect your car
1. Block the key signal. Keep your keys in a signal-blocking pouch or tin at night, away from the front door. It costs a few pounds and stops relay theft, as long as you use it every night.
2. Make the car hard to drive. A steering lock is cheap and visible. Some cars can also have a PIN-code immobiliser fitted.
3. Stop the car leaving. A telescopic bollard locked in front of the car means it can't be driven off the drive, however it was unlocked. For 4x4s, vans and pickups, a heavy-duty post is the better choice.
