Do steering wheel locks work?

Yes, as a deterrent and a delay. A good steering lock tells a thief your car will take longer than the one next door. It won't stop a determined thief with an angle grinder for long, and it only comes into play once they're already inside the car.

The short version

  • Cheap bar locks have been cut or removed in seconds in recent tests.
  • The best full-wheel locks held out for five minutes or more.
  • Look for a Sold Secure Gold or Diamond rating.
  • Police recommend one as an extra layer, not on its own.

What a steering lock does

A steering lock stops the wheel turning, so the car can't be steered away. Thames Valley Police say a lock can deter a thief and delay the getaway. West Yorkshire Police call it a simple visual deterrent, worth having because so many thefts now start with electronics, not a broken window.

That's also its weakness. A thief who has used a relay device to unlock and start a keyless car is already in the driver's seat. Everything now depends on how long the lock holds.

What the tests found

CarExpert, February 2026. A battery angle grinder cut through a genuine Toyota lock in about 20 seconds, and a budget lock in about 15. Cutting through the steering wheel rim itself, the classic way round a bar lock, took about 6 seconds.

Hagerty, 2022. A security consultant attacked eight locks with a five-minute pass mark. The Stoplock Pro, the Milenco High Security and the Disklok all held out for more than five minutes. A cheap bar lock lasted about 10 seconds, and two T-bar locks came off in about 5 seconds or less.

Car and Driver, January 2026. One hammer blow loosened a popular bar lock enough to remove it, and bolt cutters snapped its shaft. The only lock they couldn't beat was one that chained the brake pedal to the wheel.

The pattern is clear. Cheap locks are mostly for show. The heavier full-wheel covers are the ones that actually slow a thief down.

What to look for

A Sold Secure rating. Sold Secure tests car security products against a full five-minute attack with the tools a thief would carry. They use five minutes because a thief typically wants to be in and away in about two and a half. Car products are rated Silver, Gold or Diamond.

A full-wheel cover. Locks that cover the whole wheel, like the Disklok, stop the cut-the-rim trick. Bar locks don't.

Something you'll use every night. A lock in the boot does nothing. The heaviest covers take a minute to fit, so pick one you won't skip on a wet evening.

What they cost

A good lock is roughly £60 to £300. In March 2026, Carwow listed the Stoplock Pro Elite from £59.99, the Milenco from £79.99 and the Disklok Gold and Diamond from £169.99 to £295. Budget bar locks are under £40, and those are the ones that failed fastest in testing.

Will it lower my insurance?

Don't count on it. We found no insurer that promises a discount for a steering lock, and one specialist insurer lists them among devices that don't change premiums. Ask yours.

Steering lock or driveway bollard?

They do different jobs, and police suggest using more than one layer. A steering lock works inside the car, once a thief is already in. A telescopic bollard works at the edge of your drive: locked upright in front of the car, it stops the car leaving, however the thief got in.

A good lock is a cheap extra. If your car sits on a drive overnight and it's a common target, a bollard closes the exit. Our guide on bollards, Ghost immobilisers and Faraday pouches compares the main options.

Questions people ask

Can thieves just cut the steering wheel? With a bar lock, yes. In CarExpert's 2026 test, cutting the wheel rim took about 6 seconds. Full-wheel covers are designed to stop this.

Which steering lock is best? Look for Sold Secure Gold or Diamond and a full-wheel design. In testing, the Disklok, Stoplock Pro and Milenco High Security lasted longest.

Is a steering lock enough on its own? Police recommend it as one layer. It only works after a thief is in the car, so pair it with something that stops the car being reached or driven away.
