An old coaching town
Hungerford grew on the Bath Road coaching trade and the Kennet and Avon Canal, then grew again after the First World War and once more after the M4 opened in 1971. The town centre has been a conservation area since 1974, with 92 listed buildings.
A bollard on your own drive rarely needs planning permission, but if your home is listed, check with West Berkshire Council first. The whole neighbourhood plan area is also inside the North Wessex Downs National Landscape. Our planning guide covers what to ask.
New homes
The Hungerford Neighbourhood Plan, made in November 2025, allocates 44 homes at Smitham Bridge Road and about 12 north of Cottrell Close. If you're on a new estate, check your covenants or ask the management company before fitting anything at the front.
Car crime
Vehicle crime is low here. Even so, in June 2026 police appealed for information after a man was seen trying car doors late at night in Park Street and nearby streets, getting into several unlocked cars.
Getting to Hungerford
Hungerford is about 45 minutes from our base in Basingstoke, 29 miles by road, outside rush hour. It's the furthest west we fit along the A4, and there is still no call-out charge.
Parking and your drive in Hungerford
West Berkshire Council handles everything here: planning, the roads and parking enforcement. It charges £291 to paint an H-bar of reasonable length, more for a wider access, and the line is advisory only.

Questions from Hungerford
Do you cover Kintbury and Inkpen? Yes, and the rest of RG17, including Lambourn.
Is the price higher because Hungerford is further out? No. Hungerford pays the same as Basingstoke, with no call-out charge.
My house is listed. Can I still have a bollard? Often yes, but check with West Berkshire Council before you book. Our planning guide explains what to ask.
Someone keeps parking across my drive. What can I do? From the road, report it to West Berkshire Council's civil enforcement team. A car parked on your drive itself is civil trespass, and the police rarely get involved. A fold-down post, from £279, stops it; our parking guide has the detail.
Nearby areas we cover: Newbury and Thatcham, Andover, Tadley and Reading.
